Description
B&D (Bacon & Day) nineteen fret tenor banjo made by Gretsch ca. 1942. Background: In 1940 Gretsch bought the Bacon Banjo Co. After the buy-out Gretsch began making B&D/Bacon branded banjos. The Seville model was a Bacon Banjo Co. model. This Seville was assembled by Gretsch shortly after they acquired the Bacon company but I do not know if the parts are original Bacon parts. It is a very rare banjo and historically interesting. Matching serial numbers dowel and rim (40266). This Seville appears to be all original except the head, strings and possibly the bridge. It has a 3-piece neck with pearloid peghead veneer. The pearloid is etched with the brand and model. The ebony appearing fingerboard is bound and has 8 position markers just like the original B&D Seville. It has a 23" scale and hardly any fret wear. It has a laminated wood rim with 24 brackets. The finish on the neck and resonator are smooth and shiny though the resonator has some scratches and small chips on the edge and small chipping top of peghead. There is a pearloid band around the edge of the resonator. The pegs are geared Grovers and the tailpiece is a branded Presto. The neck is straight and the action is 3/16" at fret 15 with a 1/2" bridge. The banjos is 33 1/2" long; 11" head; and weighs about 7 lbs. Please see photos for additional details. Comes in a period hsc. Shipping only to lower 48 states U.S.A. Payment requested within 3 days from end of auction.
