Description
This is a really beautiful vintage 4-string tenor banjo with pearloid and metal flaked finishes. I had a hard time figuring out who made this banjo until a very knowledgeable collector gave me information. This is actually a Slingerland brand banjo. Only Slingerland made this type of metal plate flange as you can see in photo #6. No other manufacturers used this type of pot, flange, and resonator setup. I was also told that the tuners are actually Weymann patented tuners. All of them work great. The neck seems very straight. The headstock is covered with gold metal flake and also the back wood plate has a stripe of gold metal flake. The back wood plate is covered with pearloid and so is the fretboard. The head looks fairly new and the bridge is marked "Grover." There are no missing tension rods or screws. The only flaw I can see anywhere is on the back of the neck. There is a little tan color plate and that has been cracked and re-glued (see second to last photo).
There is a trim piece on the side of the fretboard with 5 dots on one side. This has quite a few small fractures in the spots where the fret bars are. Not on all of them but a lot of them (nothing too serious). The pearl fretboard is actually in excellent condition. Overall a very nice tenor banjo.
I have not cleaned this banjo at all. I have not polished the chrome or cleaned the fretboard. It is exactly the way I bought it so it will clean up even nicer than it is right now.
Total length: 33.5"
Head: 10.75" in diameter
Back plate: 13.25" in diameter
Neck: 1-1/8" wide to 1-7/16" at the widest
Number of frets: 20 fret spaces and 19 fret bars
It does come with the original case that I bought it with. I'm guessing that it is probably original to the banjo. The banjo fits very well in this case.
